Training Formats

Southern Dogs of Service employs proven methods of canine training that produce a predictable, reliable result in a timely manner. Training your dog should NOT be a never ending feat. You want training that ends, so you can go out in the world with your dog and enjoy your hard work.

Training methods do not utilize shock collars, treats or toy “rewards.” Your companion will learn to work for you, rather than for a bribe or a remote control.

Working around distractions

The training provided is specifically designed to teach your dog to perform reliably in distracting environments. Ask for a demo of a trained dog to see how different this looks than what most training programs offer. Your dog will learn to stay, come when called, heel and more around other dogs, strangers, etc.

Leash Manners (6 Weeks)

The first 6 weeks of the 10 week off leash training protocol will set you up with an excellent foundation in manners. Dogs learn to pay attention, keep slack on the lead, not pull, sit, down, stand for examination, and recall. The final four week off leash portion can be completed at a later date.

Off Leash Obedience ( 10 wks)

Allows you to work the training protocol with a weekly test from us. We will meet once a week to test you on the completion of the previous weeks lesson, and then provide you written and visual instructions on the upcoming week’s lesson plan. Basic obedience can be completed in as few as ten weeks when you follow instructions carefully. Requires 1 hour per day of your hard work, for approximately ten weeks.

Off Leash Group Class (10 wks)

Group classes, a client favorite, provide an environment for training where all dogs and owners are on the same page. Class offers excellent opportunities to train your dog to work and behave around competing distractions. The first class will be held with humans only. You will be instructed on the week’s lesson, and provided written instructions to take home. Each subsequent weekly class will begin with a test of the previous week’s lesson, to prove you have done the homework and are ready to move on with your dog to the next lesson. Group class requires weekly attendance and approximately 1 hour each day of homework.

Off Leash Board and Train (12 weeks boarded)

After an initial consultation, your dog will be boarded and professionally trained. Each day, we will work with your dog, teaching each of the same 10 weekly lessons from the private/group classes. Weeks 11 and 12, we will prepare him for a transfer of authority back to you, as well as prepare you to understand how to utilize his new skills in a practical application. You will have two free followup private lessons once your dog is returned to you. Group class attendance is free for dogs and their handlers who have completed the 10 week board and train program…you can show off the end result of our training to students currently in the process.
